BC Beer Awards

The BC Beer Awards & Festival celebrates the very best beer brewed in British Columbia.

The BC Beer Awards team has once again made the difficult decision to cancel the annual judging and festival for the second year running.

Although vaccination efforts are ramping up in B.C., it seems unlikely that restrictions will ease soon enough to allow us to offer an optimal BC Beer Awards and Festival experience. Both events depend on large groups of people and have many points of potential COVID-19 risk.

We recognize the ongoing impact that the lack of festivals and gatherings is having on BC breweries. But given the ongoing uncertainty, and while it saddens us to have to do so, we believe cancelling is best for our breweries and sponsors. We hope you'll understand.

Thanks to everyone who has taken part in the BC Beer Awards over the past 10 years. We look forward to having a beer with you all in 2022. And in the meantime, support your local breweries and restaurants!

BC BEER AWARDS & FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR AN IN-PERSON EVENT NOVEMBER 5TH 2022

Vancouver, BC (October 5th, 2022) – After a few years away, the BC Beer Awards and Festival (BCBA) is set to return for an 11th year on November 5, 2022, to the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver. And folks, we’re so excited! This year we have moved away from the traditional beer festival format, and are moving to full service, serving tall cans (473ml) across a number of style-focused bars throughout the venue (think IPA Bar, Lager/Pilsner Bar, Dark Beer Bar, etc). We’ve curated a great list of beers from 70 breweries across BC, plus some local ciders. A variety of non-alcoholic options are included in your ticket as well. This one-day event features both the BC Beer Awards Ceremony and a beer festival boasting more than 120 different beers! Participating breweries are shown above, and listed on our website. The beer menu will be provided when we make our online brochure available before the event.

Awards will be presented for 30+ beer categories plus top awards including Best in Show, the *NEW* CBC Judge's Choice, Rookie of the Year, Brewery of the Year, Innovator of the Year and The Legend Award. Returning again is the Creative Industry Awards, recognizing breweries for crafting unique items and experiences that enhance the craft beer lovers' brand awareness.

We’re pleased to be welcoming back our host, Stephen Quinn from The CBC. Food trucks on site will be courtesy of Between 2 Buns, and Top Rope Birria serving meat and veg-friendly options! Entertainment for the evening includes live music by local performer David Morin, a free-play arcade area provided by East Van Amusements, and lawn games. We’ve also got a few surprises we’re saving for the big day!

BC BEER AWARDS & FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2022 OFFICIAL COLLABORATION BREW, “BACK IN SESSION” WITH PROCEEDS TOWARDS DIVERSITY IN BREWING & BC HOSPITALITY FOUNDATION

The BC Beer Awards is proud to announce this year’s 2022 collaboration brew – Back In Session, a blackberry lemon salted sour which balances a tart acidity along with a hint of sea salt.

Once again, we’re delighted to partner with our good pals at BREWHALL and  Powell Brewery to brew this year’s collaboration beer. This 4% salted sour is refreshing, bright and loaded with juicy blackberry and lemon.

The name "Back In Session" helps to celebrate life going back to a level of normal that we're used to. Get those books, binders and beers ready for another year, because the BC Beer Awards is Back In Session!

Our collab yet again stays true to the school/classroom theme, as BCBA is committed to supporting the next generation of changemakers in our province’s beer community through our support of Diversity In Brewing. DIB is an initiative that works to improve visibility and inclusivity in the craft beer industry by providing scholarships for self-identifying BIPOC & LGBTQ2S+ students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s brewing program.

This year’s collab beer proceeds will also help to support the BC Hospitality Foundation -  A charity that raises funds to support those in the hospitality industry facing financial crisis due to a health condition. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that the hospitality industry definitely took a hit, and they want to give back.

Back In Session was brewed at Powell Brewery with the generous help of our sponsors, Altro Labels, Brewers Supply Group, Hops Connect Canada, Imperial Yeast, Keg Share & Vessel Packaging Co. Our label art was created by Michelle Lee at Broadview Creative

Not only will you find Back in Session around town leading up to this year’s Nov 5 event, you will also receive this beer as your welcome beer upon entry to the 2022 BC Beer Awards! By the way, a handful of tickets still remain for the 2022 BC Beer Awards, happening Saturday, November 5th, 2022 at the Croatian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver. BC BEER AWARDS & FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2021 OFFICIAL COLLABORATION BREW, “GAP YEAR” WITH PROCEEDS TOWARDS DIVERSITY IN BREWING & CANADIAN RED CROSS WILDFIRE APPEAL

Vancouver BC (September 22 2021)

The BC Beer Awards is proud to announce this year’s 2021 collaboration brew - Gap Year, a Hazy Pale Ale bursting with juicy fruit flavours.

We’ve partnered with our good pals at BREWHALL once again to brew this year’s collaboration ale. This 5% Hazy Pale Ale is double dry hopped with a combination of Mosaic, Idaho Gem and El Dorado hops. These hops come together to add bright and bold stone fruit, red berry and tropical aromas, with a soft and restrained bitterness.

The name "Gap Year" pokes a little fun at the fact that we've taken another year off from hosting the festival, and stays true to the school/classroom theme that all our collabs have held over the years, because supporting students in the beer community remains our priority!

Gap Year was brewed at BREWHALL with the generous help of our sponsors, Altro Labels, Brewers Supply Group, Imperial Yeast, & Vessel Packaging Co. Our label art was created by Michelle Lee at Broadview Creative.

Proceeds for this beer will support the following organizations:

Diversity In Brewing: An initiative that works to improve visibility and inclusivity in the craft beer industry by providing scholarships for self-identifying BIPOC & LGBTQ2S+ students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s brewing program.

BC Beer Awards & Festival Announces 2020 Official Collaboration Brew, “CLASS ACT” with proceeds towards DIVERSITY IN BREWING, Pacific Associations of First Nations Women Scholarship Fund, AND Hogan's Alley Society VancouveR

Vancouver BC (September 2, 2020) The BC Beer Awards is proud to announce this year’s 2020 collaboration brew - Class Act, a Boysenberry Dry Hopped Sour Ale. Though this year’s Awards and Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19, we could not pass up the opportunity to release our annual collaboration beer, packaged in cans for the first time! Class Act was brewed with our friends at BREWHALL, along with 2019 BCBA Brewery of the Year Kwantlen Polytechnic University and 2019 Rookie of the Year, Ile Sauvage Brewing.

Class Act is 4.2% ABV and 5 IBU, and uses boysenberry purée, a new version of Amarillo hop called Lemon Candy, and a brand new hop blend, HS-1228, to create a dry-hopped kettle sour that is loaded with flavour. The massive HS-1228 and Amarillo dry hop additions provide deep pineapple, mango and lemon aromas, while the boysenberry adds a bright red hue and juicy fruit flavour.

We acknowledge more needs to be done in BC’s beer industry to support and uplift people who are marginalized by systemic racism, sexism and homophobia. BCBA encourages members of the BC beer scene to use our voices to be visible allies and to commit to learning about and speaking out against injustice in our community; be a Class Act.

Class Act was brewed at BREWHALL with the generous help of our sponsors, Altro Labels, Brewers Supply Group, Imperial Yeast, & Vessel Packaging Co. Our label art was created by Michelle Lee, a  Vancouver-based graphic designer.

Proceeds for this beer will support the following organizations:

Diversity In Brewing - an initiative that works to improve inclusivity in the craft beer industry by providing scholarships for self-identifying BIPOC & LGBTQ2S+ students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s brewing program.

Pacific Associations of First Nations Women Scholarship Fund - a grassroots scholarship fund to sponsor post-secondary education for Indigenous women living in the Lower Mainland of BC on beautiful Coast Salish Territory.

Hogan's Alley Society Vancouver - an organization advocating for Black Vancouverites who have endured the legacies of urban renewal and their erasure from the official historical narrative. Through their initiatives, Hogan's Alley Society hope to build the capacity of racialized and marginalized communities to participate in city-building.

BC Beer Awards & Festival Announces 2019 Official Collaboration Brew, “Honour Roll”with proceeds towards Grant Benefiting Simon Fraser University’s Craft Beer and Brewing Essentials Program

Vancouver BC (October 16,2019) The BC Beer Awards and Festival is proud to present this year’s official collaboration brew in celebration of our 10th annual event!

BCBA award winner for last year’s Brewery of the Year, 33 Acres Brewing, and winner of Rookie of the Year, Sooke Brewing Co, have worked with collaboration-focused BREWHALL, to create a Tropical Brut IPA, the official beer of the 2019 BC Beer Awards.  Proceeds from this beer will be given to a grant formed by the BC Beer Awards, benefiting Simon Fraser University’s Craft Beer and Brewing Essentials program, aptly named “BC Beer Awards Starter Kit.” In keeping with the academic theme of our collaboration series, we’ve chosen the name “Honour Roll” for this year’s brew, to commemorate 10 years of celebrating BC’s best in class beers!

The Tropical Brut IPA is brewed with German Pilsner Malt, and Wakatu and Amarillo hops for a fresh and fruity beer with a refreshing dry and spritzy finish that sits at 6.5% ABV and 26 IBU. The beer will be on tap at the 2019 BC Beer Awards, 33 Acres Brewing, Sooke Brewing Co and BREWHALL. A select few locations around Vancouver will also be pouring Honour Roll leading up to and after the event, read below for the full list.

In partnership with Simon Fraser University’s Craft Brewing Essentials program, the proceeds of the Tropical Brut IPA will go towards the grant created by BC Beer Awards in 2018. The grant, titled “The BC Beer Awards Starter Kit” will see that a new student entering the Craft Beer and Brewing Essentials program will receive $3700 towards their tuition. The BC Beer Awards recognizes the hard work and passion that their peers in the beer industry demonstrate day to day, and want to provide an opportunity for a deserving student to become involved in this community.

The BC Beer Awards would like to thank the following organizations for their support: Brewers Supply Group (BSG), Imperial Organic Yeast, Direct Tap, BREWHALL, and Outshinery for the great graphic!

BC Beer awards 2019

The 10th annual BC Beer Awards and Festival (BCBA) is set to return on October 19, 2019, to the Croatian Cultural Centre in Vancouver. The signature consumer tasting event of BC Craft Beer Month, this festival celebrates the very best in craft brewing from across the province. This one-day event features both the BC Beer Awards Ceremony and a beer festival showcasing 45 of British Columbia's best breweries.

Awards will be presented for 30+ beer categories plus top awards including Best in Show, CBC People's Choice, Rookie of the Year, Brewery of the Year, Innovator of the Year, and Brewer's Challenge. Last year the BC Beer Awards challenged brewers to keep things fresh by brewing their best fresh-hop beer. This year as BCBA has 'Aged 10 Years', we thought it was appropriate to challenge brewers to age their beer as well and were notified well in advance to stash their special brew away. Returning for the third year, the Creative Industry Awards recognize breweries for crafting unique items and experiences that enhance the craft beer lovers' brand awareness.

Returning to the festival will be our MC Stephen Quinn from CBC, our community booths, food trucks and event sponsors! Once the awards ceremony is over, guests will enjoy live music. We’ll also have a selection of BC Ciders presented by The BC Farmed Craft Cider Association!

BC Beer Awards & Festival Announces
2018 Official Collaboration Brew

Proceeds will be allocated to a newly established grant benefitting students enrolled in Simon Fraser University’s Craft Beer and Brewing Essentials Program

Vancouver, BC (October 4, 2018) The BC Beer Awards and Festival is proud to present their inaugural BC Beer Awards Collaboration Brew.

BC Beer Awards' 2017 winner of Brewery of the Year, Mount Arrowsmith Brewing (Parksville), and Rookie of the Year, Backcountry Brewing (Squamish) worked with a collaboration-focused brewery, BREWHALL (Vancouver), to create a fresh-hopped Kölsch, the official beer of the 2018 BC Beer Awards. The proceeds of this beer will be allocated to a newly established grant for students enrolled in Simon Fraser University’s Craft Beer and Brewing Essentials Program, aptly named “The BC Beer Awards Starter Kit.” In keeping with the collaborative spirit behind the making of this beer, we’ve named this beer “Group Project”.

Group Project was brewed with German malts provided by Brewers Supply Group and fresh Lumberjack™ hops, generously donated by BC Hop Company, picked at the farm just hours before brewing. These hops have notes of resin and citrus fruit along with a clean bitterness and floral aroma. Dieter, a traditional German Kölsch strain of yeast provided by Imperial Yeast, will build on the fresh lumberjack hops and malt backbone to create a refreshing and clean Kölsch-style beer, which sits at 5% ABV and 23 IBU. Releasing next week, this beer will be on tap at the 2018 BC Beer Awards, Mount Arrowsmith Brewing, Backcountry Brewing, and BREWHALL. A select few taphouses around Vancouver will also be pouring Group Project, more information below.

In partnership with Simon Fraser University’s Craft Brewing Essentials Program, the proceeds of the collaboration beer will go towards a new grant that the BC Beer Awards & Festival has created. The grant, titled “The BC Beer Awards Starter Kit” will see that a new or continuing student enrolled in the Craft Beer and Brewing Essentials program will receive $3000 towards their tuition. The BC Beer Awards recognizes the hard work and passion that their peers in the beer industry demonstrate day to day, and want to provide an opportunity for a deserving student to be involved in this community.

BC Beer Awards would like to thank the following organizations for their support: BC Hop CoImperial Organic YeastDirect TapBREWHALL, and Brewers Supply Group.

You can find the official BC Beer Awards Collaboration Brew, Group Project, pouring at the following establishments in Vancouver: Alibi Room, St. Augustines, Central City Pub Beatty, 12 Kings Pub, Timber, Tap & Barrel Olympic Village, Tap & Barrel Convention Centre, Tap & Barrel Shipyards, Mt. BC Beer Awards, The Full Story:

The BC Beer Awards & Festival (BCBA) has become one of the most anticipated awards ceremonies and beer tasting festivals in the Lower Mainland. We will be returning to the Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Drive, Vancouver) again this year.

Last year's BC Beer Awards judging drew over 850 unique entries from over 90 BC breweries and brewpubs, with winners selected in 30 distinct categories. This year we received 1085 entries from 113 BC breweries. All judges were either BJCP or Cicerone Certified or professional brewers. The BC Beer Awards adheres to standards set by the Internationally recognized Beer Judging Certification Program (BJCP).

The mandate of the BC Beer Awards is to reward excellent beers even if not brewed exactly to strict style guidelines. Secondary, is ensuring that every beer brewed in BC can be entered regardless of whether it fits in a style or not. Craft Brewers across the province are well-known for their innovation and creativity, something that the BCBA organizers are keen to help celebrate. With 20+ new breweries opened in BC in 2017 and more to come in 2018, we’re well over 150 craft breweries in BC now!
